It is the 2nd least populous prefecture in Japan and generally has a Sea of Japan climate that is characterized by rain and heavy snowfall in winter. It is the home of the Izumo Taisha Shrine thought to be one of the most important Shinto shrines in Japan and famous as a site for couples getting married.
Shimane prefecture is off the beaten track but well worth the effort of visiting.
Among its most famous attractions there are Tsuwano, a quiet, unspoilt mountain town, the great shrine at Izumo and Matsue.
The beautiful coastal line is a popular destination of swimming for the Japanese in summer and the mountain area has lots of ski resorts.
